Welcome to My Personal Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma Page!
On April 25, 2019, after two months of cardiology, pulmonology, and rheumatology visits, I wrapped up the tour with a rheumatology visit. That is the day I learned what the Scl70 antibody was, and that I tested positive. Scleroderma is a Greek word that literally translates as “hard skin.”
Sclero = hard
Derma = skin
Based on my symptoms and chest CT, I was told the diagnosis was Systemic Scleroderma with Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD).
Systemic scleroderma is an autoimmune disorder that affects the skin and internal organs. It is characterized by the buildup of scar tissue (fibrosis) in the skin and other organs. The fibrosis is caused by the body's production of too much collagen, which normally strengthens and supports connective tissues. The symptoms usually begin with episodes of Raynaud's phenomenon. This may be followed by puffy or swollen hands before the skin becomes thickened and hard. The fibrosis can also affect internal organs, including the esophagus, heart, lungs, and kidneys. - https://rarediseases.info.nih.gov
On March 5, 2023, my sweet friend, Gina, gained her angel wings. Gina and I met through my mom, three years ago, when they both realized Gina also had Scleroderma. We were both single moms living with a rare autoimmune condition that most have never heard of, and we bonded instantly. I named our team ‘Stepping out for Gina,’ because I plan to walk in her honor.
It is my hope, that friends and loved ones will join me on May 6th to walk in honor of Gina, and for anyone else who, like me, has been affected by Scleroderma. (I believe you click on "Join Georgia's team" to sign up and walk with me).
Donating through this site is simple, fast and secure. It is also the most efficient way to make a contribution and support me to help raise funds for scleroderma patients. To make a donation, click the "Donate Now" button that appears under my photo, then just follow the instructions.
If you would like to join me and help raise funds, please click on “Join My Team” and follow the directions. Don't see the Join button, let me know and we can create a team.
